Azerbaijan’s ambassador to the United States recently recognized BYU as the first US university to offer Azerbaijani 101. “BYU teaches not only about the language but about the culture too. The cultural nuance of a people is integral in understanding their language,” said ambassador Khazar Ibrahim. Ibrahim said his country will provide two scholarships for BYU students looking to study in Azerbaijan, a predominantly Muslim country that connects Europe and Central Asia and is a melting pot of world cultures. The Azerbaijani class of 11 students is being taught by BYU senior and polyglot Andrew Bonney. He served a mission in Azerbaijan’s neighboring country of Armenia.

Since BYU Athletics does not receive a tithing allotment from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, ticket sales, donations, and television contracts provide much-needed revenue to keep the program competitive and successful.
