General
What is Philanthropies and what is its relationship to Employee Giving?
Philanthropies operates as a department of the Office of the Presiding Bishopric and is responsible to correlate, encourage, and facilitate contributions - beyond tithes and offerings - to the Church and its affiliate organizations. All donations from the Employee Giving Campaign are processed through Philanthropies, and then 100% of the monies raised are put in the fund allocated.
Why give to BYU?
Many employees give because of the students, to invest in BYU, or to invest in their department. They know that others will be blessed by their donations, and that they are blessed for giving.
How much should employees give?
We do not suggest gift amounts. Rather, we ask employees to participate at a meaningful level that reflects their individual commitment and financial ability. The purpose of this campaign is participation focused; when everyone gives a little, it makes a large difference.
What is the Employee Giving Campaign?
The Employee Giving Campaign at Brigham Young University offers an opportunity for faculty and staff to help students achieve their educational goals through annual contributions.
When is the campaign?
The campaign is throughout the month of March. During March, employees are encouraged to start a payroll deduction or make a recurring donation. Regardless of when the campaign is, employees can make a gift any time throughout the year.
Where does our money go?
100% of all employee contributions go to accounts the employee designates. Some examples include:
- Inspiring Learning – President Reese may direct these funds to board approved areas of greatest need. This includes the inspiring learning initiative including mentorships, internships, and scholarships.
- General Scholarships – giving here allows more applicants to benefit.
- College Inspiring Learning Fund – deans direct these funds to approved priorities in their area.
How will just a few dollars from me to this campaign make any difference?
When one donation is added to thousands of others, the sum and resulting impact grows exponentially. One person giving to BYU can make one incredible difference in the life of one person. This is the power of one.
I recently submitted my United Way donation, so I'm already giving. Why does BYU keep asking me for money?
The United Way is a charitable organization that supports worthy causes in our community. All the money donated goes off campus to support things like women’s shelters and literacy centers. BYU’s support for that campaign is the university’s way of being a good neighbor to our community. Money donated through the Employee Giving campaign, on the other hand, stays here on campus. Choose2Give is a student run campaign inviting students to help out other students by making a donation. This program helps students enjoy the blessings of giving back. Choose2Give runs the first 2 weeks in March, overlapping the employee giving campaign. Any employee gifts to Choose2Give are included in employee giving participation calculations.
