Disabled Women Designers Event Honors Graduates and Showcases Talents

The theme of this event was, "The Other Side of Me" and was held not only to honor the disabled graduates, but to showcase the skills and talents they have developed despite their disabilities.

Kampala — DWD, which was established in 2004, partnered with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as 'Mormons', to provide a state of the art tailoring and knitting equipment.  Since its establishment over 100 individuals have been trained.

The theme of this event was “The Other Side of Me,” and was held not only to honor the graduates, but to showcase the skills and talents they have developed despite their disabilities.  It was also an auction and fashion show to help them raise money for a permanent business center where they can market their products and have training and business advisory services.   

The mission of the organization is to 'empower people with disabilities to increase their household income through training in income-generating practical skills.' 

Florence Namubine, a member of the organization, said “The organization has helped us survive and keep going.  We sew and share the profits.”

Those in attendance included Member of Parliament Hajjit Sophia Nabule Jjuko, Mayor of Lubaga Owek.Joyce Nabbossa Sebugwawo, Deputy Mayor Cathy Nagawa, Female Councilor of Rubaga Division Lilian Walugembe, and Lubaga Division Councillor Aisha.
