Dear Fellow PLC Members,

The promise of spring and the hope that is in us through Jesus Christ are embedded in this time of year.

We are so glad to be here with you!

For some of us, the uncertainty preceding Y2K doesn’t seem that long ago, but a quarter of a century has passed since then. Wow! This year also marks 25 years since the President’s Leadership Council began and 150 years since the founding of Brigham Young University.

Not coincidentally, the PLC is focused with President C. Shane Reese on BYU becoming what prophets have said it would and must become. Last fall we had as a theme Developing the Courage to Be Different. The theme for these meetings is another of President Reese’s Becoming BYU priorities: Fostering BYU’s “Double Heritage.” These two Becoming BYU emphases are related—like two sides of a coin.

The quotation in the theme comes from President Spencer W. Kimball’s “The Second Century of Brigham Young University.” He said:

Your double heritage and dual concerns with the secular and the spiritual require you to be “bilingual.” As scholars you must speak with authority and excellence to your professional colleagues in the language of scholarship, and you must also be literate in the language of spiritual things. We must be more bilingual, in that sense, to fulfill our promise in the second century of BYU.

In the Gatherings of Saints app for this meeting, there is additional information on fostering BYU’s double heritage, including links to short videos created by the BYU Faculty Center. (If you haven’t yet installed the app, use the links below.)

Becoming BYU involves the entire BYU community. Through our support of student-focused aid, including inspiring learning, we are a vital part of this work. Thank you for all you do!

We hope you enjoy the meetings,

PS: The PLC website, plc.byu.edu, is currently hosted on BYU servers. In the next few months, Philanthropies will be moving the site to Church servers. The move will maintain security but allow you to access the content using your Church username and password rather than your BYU net ID and password. More information on the transition will be emailed soon.
