Grateful for a Better Future

Jan 2020

After having her daughter at such a young age, Rachel Perrier from Switzerland came to America to learn English so that she could get a better job back home. “I was attending an English as a second language program and doing BYU–Pathway Worldwide,” says Rachel. “I finished BYU–Pathway because I was thinking I would go back to Switzerland and continue through BYU–Idaho online. That’s when I learned that I could study tuition-free at LDS Business College on a single-parent scholarship.”

She is now an accounting and business analytics student at the college. Although she’s only allowed to work 20 hours a week on campus as an international student, with the aid of her scholarship, Rachel has been able to attend school and support her daughter by herself. She’s especially grateful for the lessons her daughter is learning. “I have lots of homework and try to manage both home and school, but I can see that she really is grateful for everything she has,” continues Rachel. “She’s learning a level of gratitude at an age that most other kids don’t.”

When Rachel goes to school and is able to be home when her daughter gets home from school, she knows why. “I’m really grateful,” says Rachel, holding back tears. “I know it’s still really hard and I have to count every penny and be really careful, but [this scholarship] was just the one blessing I needed to change our lives. Thank you so much.”
