“I Believe BYU Football is One of His Instruments”

Students come to BYU from all over the world to grow in the language of the Spirit and the language of their chosen discipline. And every day, BYU employees help make that possible—not only through their work and throuh financial donations they make, but also through friendships and personal encouragement.
This was the case for Dining Services employee Maria Pineda and student Charlie Miska.
Charlie committed to play football for the University of Virginia before leaving on a Spanish-speaking mission to Oakland, California. But after returning home, he felt prompted to take a different path and enrolled at BYU. He arrived in Provo determined to work, train, and trust the Lord as he pursued a walk-on spot with the football team.
“I began eating at the Cannon Center during one of the most challenging times of my life,” Charlie recalls. “I was pursuing ambitious goals while living far from my family and support system.”
When Charlie noticed Maria spoke Spanish, he struck up a conversation about his love for Latin culture. What began as a brief conversation quickly became a meaningful connection.
“From that moment on, we began to talk frequently, even during my lunch breaks,” Maria says. “He would tell me about his dreams as a young man and returned missionary: to graduate, to continue serving the Lord, to have a girlfriend, and to play football for BYU.”
Maria often saw Charlie reading scriptures in the dining area and quietly cheered him on in his academic, athletic, and personal goals.
“I encouraged him to be patient, to keep trying, and reminded him that if we are patient, the Lord knows the right moment to give us what we need,” she remembers. “I also prayed for him privately, hoping he would be able to reach his goals.”
In time, Charlie made the football team. And in the Cougars’ 2025 season opener, he scored the final touchdown in a 69-0 win against Portland State. He’s doing well in school and recently got engaged—all things he once shared with Maria as dreams, and things for which she faithfully prayed.
“I believe God often uses His children as instruments of comfort and support for those in need—just as He did through Maria in my life,” he says. “She showed me sincere kindness and love. She listened to me, offered thoughtful advice, and prayed for me and my goals. Her support played a key role in helping me make the team, grow personally, and prepare for my future career.”
But what surprised Maria most was how deeply she was changed in the process. “Seeing Charlie [succeed] . . . fills my heart with joy,” she says. “It has taught me that even when we are busy with so many things, we should always take time to observe others, to listen to them, and to pray for them—just as Jesus Christ would. Charlie didn’t just achieve his dreams; he also inspired me.”
Charlie feels the same. “Now, as I prepare to step into the world, I hope to follow Maria’s example: to show love, offer guidance, and pray for others—just as she did for me.”
Every BYU employee—whether in a dining hall, classroom, office, or grounds crew—has the chance to bless a student’s journey. Their time, encouragement, example, and financial gifts all play a role in helping students stay grounded, grow in faith, and reach their goals.
“Witnessing [Charlie’s] spiritual and personal growth has strengthened me and made me reflect on the power of a word of encouragement, a sincere prayer, and the simple act of seeing others through the eyes of Christ,” Maria says. “This story didn’t just impact his life—it transformed mine as well.”
Each year, thousands of students walk onto campus carrying hopes and uncertainties just like Charlie. And employees like Maria help them rise.
