While serving as a full-time missionary, Tatenda Felix Mukaro from Harare, Zimbabwe, Africa, wondered how he could accomplish his dream of obtaining a degree from an institution of higher education and becoming self-reliant. He later received a letter notifying him of a fantastic educational opportunity: BYU-Pathway Worldwide. His interest was piqued, and after completing his mission, he gained admittance and enrolled. However, one obstacle presented itself: how would he pay for his education?

“As a young adult student struggling to become self-reliant in Africa, I realized the only way I could become self-reliant was through education. BYU-Pathway allowed access to higher education for me,” says Tatenda. It also alleviated “some financial constraints because of its affordability,” and Tatenda received a scholarship that allowed him to focus entirely on his studies. “This scholarship reduced pressure on my side and helped me to focus more on my studies and not worry about where I would get money to pay for my tuition,” he says.

As he continues to move toward completing his degree, Tatenda is thankful to the donors who made his scholarship possible. He is aware of the impact an education is having on others in addition to him.

“I just want to say to the donors and friends of BYU-Pathway who support this scholarship fund: keep up the good work and please do continue to support this worthy cause,” Tatenda says. “Many hundreds of young adults earnestly seek to develop themselves in my country but lack the means. I am confident this similar scholarship which helped me will help them also.”
