The mission of The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square is to unite people throughout the world through music and to bring joy, peace, and healing to those who listen. One way the Choir fulfills this mission is by touring across the United States and abroad usually every other year, visiting different places and bringing its messages directly to audiences around the world. The Choir embarked on its first tour when it performed at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893. After seeing the impact of the Choir’s music, President Joseph F. Smith said of the tour, “I consider it has done more good than five thousand sermons would have done in an ordinary or even in an extraordinary way.” Since then, the Choir has gone on to share the gift of spiritual music with millions and has performed in countries such as Israel, Russia, Japan, and Australia. With plans to continue to visit more countries in the years to come, the Choir looks to the future with hope and gratitude.
Going Beyond the Music
In addition to live performances, the Choir has also found ways to engage with people while on tour by holding special receptions before each performance. Guests often include arts organizations; notable musicians; media; and government, community, and religious leaders from the area. The reception provides a unique one-on-one opportunity for guests to learn more about the Choir. After attending the reception and concert in Zurich, religious scholar Professor Jean-François Mayer wrote, “Faith may not always move mountains, but it changes lives. . . . It is not the love of music alone that motivates the members of The Tabernacle Choir, but their faith.”
“I don’t often have the opportunity to personally meet with those who support the Choir through Philanthropies, so I was thrilled to be able to do so on the Choir’s tour through the Northwest of the United States a few years ago. My wife, Lucie, and I, with a few members of the Choir, spent a wonderful evening with generous individuals who were curious about the Choir— its purpose and overall mission. It was a unique occasion to meet our supporters on a much more personal level and spend quality time getting to know them. Lucie and I talked, laughed, shared experiences, and answered many questions about the purpose of the Choir.
